Glenn Ferris was just 17 when he joined Don Ellis’s big band as a featured trombone soloist. He went on to enjoy a dream series of collaborations with Frank Zappa, Stevie Wonder, Archie Shepp, Michel Petrucciani, and more.
In 2015, he assembled the Glenn Ferris Italian Quintet, which released Animal Love three years later. That same lineup now delivers Soul Beautiful, expanding on a theme he had previously recorded on X Acrimo!
Recorded over three days in Tuscany, the album astonishes with its variety: a poignant ballad (Soul Beautiful), continuous interweaving musical voices (Good Vibes – Good Times), a reggae feel (X-Actimo), and fresh interpretations of pieces from widely different corners of musical history—Ezz-thetic by George Russell, In a Mist by Bix Beiderbecke, and The House of the Rising Sun.
Never showy, and always seeking a balance in which individual expression does not overshadow the collective spirit, the quintet demonstrates both artistry and finesse.
There are, of course, Ferris’s soaring flights in his unmistakable musical language, along with the superb flights of clarinetist Mirco Mariottini. But what works so beautifully is the charm of their musical harmony, perfectly expressed in Blues Me.
