It’s difficult to find the words to embrace the fertile career of Glenn Ferris: artistic chameleon, a major figure on the contemporary Jazz Scene, high priest of Trombone Attitude, eclectic and bantered…
In the early 60s, success was far from assured. While the American Jazz Scene was blasting horns all over the country, a kid in Hollywood, born in 1950, secretly dreamed of grafting the trombone’s glissando onto the growls and caresses of that magic trumpet +sax equation. To the uninitiated the instrument was an ungainly contraption offering no opportunity for grace or style. At a concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic (managed by his uncle, an oboist), Glenn Ferris fell instantly in love with his future instrument of choice. He was eight years old. He started learning the Trombone and at the same time studied classical music. 1964 saw the turning point, when he heard the latest record from the saxophonist Eric Dolphy Last Date He moved straight into high gear, focussing on Jazz theory, improv and composition; his teacher, the massive and much missed trumpeter Don Ellis (who died in 1978, at the age of 44, and still famous today for his great original soundtrack for the film “French Connection” – 1971), accelerated his progress, making him Trombone Soloïst of the Don Ellis Big Band as early as 1966.

First of all, I love the mission of SoundScape and the passion that they put into presenting the artists and their product. The 180g audio vinyl, artwork, and packaging are second to none.
After my first listen to this double LP by Glenn Ferris and Company, I had to share my enthusiasm. The unusual instrumentation of trombone (Ferris) and clarinet/bass clarinet (played by Mirco Mariottini) with guitar trio support is such a refreshing alternative to the typical sax/trumpet led jazz quintet.
Ferris, Mariottini, and bassist Franco Fabbrini prove themselves to be very adept composers with all members turning out beautiful solos and intricate instrumental interplay throughout. Some of the modal jam sections bring to mind the Miles Davis Bitches Brew era for me.
Animal Love is a very fine offering by an ensemble that I hope to hear a lot more music from in the future.

I quite enjoyed the music on this double album, which explores various strains of traditional jazz, centered on tasty trombone playing and filtered through an Italian lens. The performances are superb throughout (e.g., dig Giulio Stracciati’s soulful guitar work on the cover of “St. James Infirmary”) and the sound is simultaneously spacious, rich, and warm.

I never left vinyl but can say I was definitely lost in the wilderness for many years. This record is one of a handful that has yanked me back home. How often does one get the time to sit in a gallery and just take in the work. I feel like that, sat in my space, between a couple of speakers taking in this piece of art. Great music, fantastic recording, you literally experience the passion.

This totally fit the bill in both those categories! Two discs of elegant super cool music! Owning this music and the package that it comes in, makes me feel like I’m ‘in the club’! Love it!

Love the gatefold and artwork. The vinyl… 180g weight and pristine. Very well recorded with everything coming through and the details shimmer. Top notch musicians and engineering. Highly recommended
